Solar Panel Installation in Orlando, FL
Solar panel installation in Orlando through our Powur partnership, coordinated with the roof underneath. One accountable team for the roof and the panel attachment.
Solar That Starts With the Roof
Solar panel installation in Orlando goes best when someone checks the roof first. Joe McKenna, Sun State’s owner, is a certified solar consultant through the Powur platform, and Sun State Solar and Roofing holds Florida State Certified Roofing Contractor License #CCC1334700. That pairing means one team looks at both the panels and the roof they attach to. Most solar warranty disputes, and most solar-related leaks, come down to how the panels were attached and flashed.
Disclosure: Solar electrical work is performed in partnership with our licensed solar contractor partners under the Powur platform. Sun State Solar and Roofing handles all roofing-side work and project coordination.
Our solar installation services page lists what is included in every install. This page covers what is specific to Orlando homes: roof types, shade from mature trees, HOA rules, and which offices handle the permit and the grid connection. How Solar Panel Installation Works in Orlando
A solar project has more steps than the day the panels go up. Here is the order things happen in.
- Consultation. An on-site roof condition assessment with photos, a sun exposure and shading analysis, a review of your last 12 months of electricity bills for system sizing, and a financing comparison. Usually 60-90 minutes on-site.
- Roof decision. An honest answer on whether your roof is ready for panels or should be replaced first.
- Written estimate. Panel count, inverter type and expected production, itemized, with no obligation.
- Permits and paperwork. Through Powur, our installation partners handle permitting, utility interconnection paperwork and final inspections.
- Install day. Most residential systems are installed on-roof in 1-2 days. Sun State handles the roofing-side work: flashing, penetrations and ridge ventilation.
- Inspection and connection. Permitting and utility interconnection typically add 4-8 weeks total project time depending on jurisdiction.
Who you connect with depends on your address. Much of Orlando is served by OUC, the Orlando Utilities Commission, while other parts of Orange County are on Duke Energy, and each utility runs its own interconnection process. The permit side splits the same way it does for roofing: the City of Orlando inside city limits, Orange County for unincorporated areas with an Orlando mailing address.
Solar Panel Installation Cost in Orlando
The honest answer to “what does solar cost?” is that it depends on your electricity use more than your house. A 2,000 square foot home with a pool pump and two electric cars needs a very different system from the same house with modest usage. That is why the consultation starts with a year of bills rather than your square footage.
From there, the price is shaped by how many panels the roof can hold in good sun, the inverter choice (microinverters or a string inverter with optimizers), whether you add battery backup, and how you pay. Powur partners with multiple lenders to offer cash purchase, $0-down loans, and lease/PPA arrangements, and we walk you through the math so you can compare them apples-to-apples. Owned (not leased) systems generally do increase resale value; leased systems are more complicated when you sell.
One more line belongs in the real cost: the roof. If your roof needs work before panels go on, that is part of the project, and you should hear about it at the consultation rather than after the panels are up.
Solar on Tile Roofs and Other Orlando Roof Types
Tile. Clay and concrete tile is common on Orlando’s Mediterranean-style homes. Solar on a tile roof requires tile-specific mounting hardware and an installer who understands tile flashing. Tiles are lifted at each mount, the mount is fastened and flashed, and the tile is cut and reset around it. Older concrete tile can crack when walked on, so it helps to have matching spare tile on hand.
Asphalt shingle. Works with standard mounting hardware and is the most common solar roof in Florida. Every penetration is flashed with a manufacturer-spec system, and our roofing workmanship warranty covers the penetrations we make.
Standing-seam metal. The ideal solar roof. Clamp-on mounting means zero penetrations.
Shade. Older neighborhoods such as College Park and Audubon Park have big live oaks over many roofs. A roof face shaded much of the day may not be worth covering, which is what the shading analysis is for.
Roof Before Solar: Why the Order Matters
The biggest mistake Florida homeowners make with solar isn’t choosing the wrong panel. It is installing solar on a roof that needs replacement first. If your roof is within about 5 years of needing replacement, replace it first. Removing and re-attaching panels later is expensive and risks voiding your solar warranty.
The math is simple. Premium panel warranties run 25 years on production, and a shingle roof lasts 15-25 years in Florida. A shingle roof installed in the early 2000s is already past 20 years old. Putting new panels on it means the roof will likely need replacing long before the panels do. Doing the roof first lets the two start their lives together. Our page on roof replacement in Orlando covers costs, materials and HOA approval for the reroof.
HOAs, Permits and Hurricane Season
Many Orlando neighborhoods have HOAs. Florida law (Section 163.04, Florida Statutes) stops associations and deed restrictions from banning solar panels, though an association can still have a say in placement within limits that protect the system’s performance, and may require an application first. Submit it early so approval is not the thing holding up the permit.
Orlando also sits in hurricane country. Charley crossed the city in 2004, and Ian in 2022 and Milton in 2024 brought hours of wind and rain to Orange County. With that much wind load in play, how the mounts are attached to the roof and how each one is flashed matters as much as the panels themselves. Sealing and flashing every one of those penetrations is the roofing side of the job, and it is the part Sun State handles. A free solar consultation is the place to start.
Solar Questions from Orlando Homeowners
Most residential systems are installed on-roof in 1-2 days. Permitting and utility interconnection typically add 4-8 weeks total project time depending on jurisdiction. In Orlando that means the City of Orlando or Orange County for the permit and your electric utility for the connection. If the roof needs replacing first, add the reroof to the schedule.
Yes. Solar installations need permits and inspections in Florida, and your utility has to approve the system before it is switched on. Through the Powur platform, our installation partners handle permitting, utility interconnection paperwork and final inspections. Sun State handles the roofing side, including the flashing on every roof penetration.
Square footage is not what sets the price; electricity use is. System size comes from your last 12 months of electricity bills, and then roof space, shade, inverter type, battery backup and financing shape the total. The free consultation ends with a written itemized estimate, and you can compare cash, loan and lease/PPA options side by side.
Yes. Tile-roof solar needs tile-specific mounting hardware and an installer who understands tile flashing. Tiles are lifted at each mount, the mount is fastened and flashed, and the tile is cut and reset around it. Older concrete tile can crack underfoot, so matching spare tile helps. As a state-certified roofing contractor, we handle the roofing side properly.
If your roof is within about 5 years of needing replacement, yes. Removing and re-attaching panels later is expensive and risks voiding your solar warranty. A shingle roof installed in the early 2000s is already past 20 years old, near the end of the 15-25 year range for shingle in Florida. We give you an honest roof assessment at the consultation.
Generally, no. Florida law (Section 163.04, Florida Statutes) stops HOAs and deed restrictions from banning solar panels. An association can still have a say in where the panels go, within limits that protect the system's performance, and may require an application. Read your HOA documents and apply early so approval does not hold up the permit.
